Further, the transparency provided by the Galaxy builds trust with consumers and better informs purchasing decisions. As the customer-facing side of this industry, it is our responsibility to erase the legacy of generations of prohibition and propaganda with a new, more evidence-based paradigm. By arming growers and budtenders with the resources they need to engage effectively and confidently with even the most hesitant of customers, together we can reframe the entire conversation around cannabis.

This column originally appeared in the February issue of Cannabis Business Times' sister publication Cannabis Dispensary. In this case, I visited a commercial cannabis grow facility that also served as a demonstration site for a garden lighting manufacturer.

I was there as part of a job interview with the light manufacturer to see their lights in action. Along the way, I pointed out a few issues I saw with the grow.

Unfortunately, they said yes. After my initial visit, I thought I had a handle on the problems that needed to be overcome. By commercial standards, the facility was fairly small about 3, plants , so it should have been fairly easy to get in shape, right? The plants were watered and fertigated by hand and grown in fabric pots using a hand-mixed, soilless grow media. The two head growers were let go.

The grow spaces were very dirty—soil on every surface and dead leaves everywhere. Every plant was nutritionally locked out; there were purple stems and yellow leaves as far as the eye could see. I honestly thought I would green up the place, reduce labor, simplify nutrition, train my replacement and move on in 12 weeks. What could go wrong? System Upgrades and Facility Redesign. It turns out many changes, which I knew nothing about, were planned to begin within weeks. Decisions had to be made immediately regarding facility layout, growing systems and media, and watering and fertigating methods, as new systems were being designed and built.

Construction was planned to add hallways and reconfigure the grow rooms into similar sizes. Double racks, both stationary and mobile, were being installed as the rooms were converted.

A programmable logic controller PLC -based control system was being installed to water and feed the garden, control HVAC, manage CO2 and eventually support a sensor network. Trying to plan all these changes while also working to fix the grow in 20 hours a week the agreed-upon amount of time I would spend there was simply not possible. The garden had many pest problems including spider mites and root aphids, both widespread.

This heavy pest control regimen was leading to phytotoxic loads on the plants. In other words, the accumulated concentration of pesticides was becoming toxic to the plants. The entire facility had environmental issues. This led to the manual on and off cycling of banks of grow lights all day to give the plants some light, but not raise the garden temperatures even though reduced light inevitably leads to reduced harvests. Every grow room suffered from a lack of air movement, as most of the wall-mounted recirculating fans were old and needed to be replaced as well.

I had not even considered possible organizational problems. In this case, the person ultimately in charge of the facility was an owner, who had worked for decades as a general contractor, but had no cultivation experience. The only person in ownership with grow experience was working in a sales and business development capacity.

We started by flushing the plants. This led to extremely high levels of nutrients bound up in the grow media, which locked out the plants reduced their ability to uptake nutrients. Flushing helped—the nutrient concentration PPMs of the run-off solution lowered and the plants visually looked better. Next, the facility was cleaned from top to bottom. There was soil everywhere—on the fans, lights, conduits, floors. Just about all the old, unused nutrients and growing media were thrown out.

Then we switched from hand-mixed loose grow media to rockwool, starting with new transplants. This change reduced the mess from mixing loose media and significantly reduced transplanting labor—from three people working two days each six total days to two people working four hours each one day.

Predator mites were released to combat the spider mites while reducing pesticide exposure. The owner in charge left to attend a conference for most of a week, then a personal matter took him away for another week soon thereafter. During this period, the employees stopped listening to me and began doing whatever they wanted—usually over-watering and excessively removing fan leaves from the plants. The staff knew that labor cuts were coming, with transplanting already streamlined and watering and fertigation automation being planned.

The grow became a free-for-all with everyone scavenging for work. The mood turned gloomy. And mistakes were being made. He sprayed plants with an untested concentration of CalMag a calcium magnesium supplement and humic acids. We had talked just a few days before about how to properly test new sprays: Treat a small number of test plants, spray another group with just the water in the mix to rule out its contribution, then wait a day or two to see the results.

The entire garden took a major change for the worse. With too many people calling the shots, some plants were underfed, others overfed. The root aphids came back with a vengeance, and the environmental problems were unabated.

This was when the owner stopped listening. Suddenly I was responsible for everything—inventory, product procurement, training, SOP creation, automation and process planning, design review, verifying what each employee was doing and how they were doing it—all in 20 hours a week.

While growers who accept full-time positions might get a salary instead of a set number of hours, the expectations and operational responsibilities can be the same.

This experience has taught me many new lessons and reminded me of others I had forgotten. Here are some of those lessons. Christopher Sloper is a self-proclaimed indoor- and outdoor-gardening geek, with decades of experience growing everything from corn to cannabis. His education consists of Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and Master of Business Administration. The broad edibles category grew by 37 percent during the months of January through October of compared to the same period in in Colorado, Washington and Oregon-the states with the most established recreational cannabis programs.

But high-CBD edibles expanded by percent during that time period. In concentrates, growth reached percent for high-CBD products, compared to 47 percent for the broader concentrates category.

Topicals growth last year hit Growth among high-CBD tinctures last year was also strong-up 86 percent compared to percent growth for all tinctures. CBD also known as cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive compound found in marijuana often represents a minor slice of the marketplace pie. In the candy market i. But in the tinctures market, CBD is a player: The massage business, apparently, is high on CBD, too.

Among topicals, CBD-rich massage oils are far and away the growth leader, with sales expanding by percent for most of last year. Vape pens have been a prominent growth story for several years, and when we consider high-CBD vapes, the story becomes even more compelling.

High-CBD vape sales expanded by percent during the period, compared to 93 percent for vapes overall. In edibles, however, we find the most impressive CBD boom from those three markets. High-CBD candy grew by Gummies are the biggest-selling type of edible in the cannabis marketplace. Clearly, consumers are turning to high-CBD products, brands are responding, and the trend continues to rise. Douglas Brown is the owner of Contact High Communications. Leafly operates in compliance with state laws regarding access to cannabis. If you keep seeing this age prompt whenever you visit Leafly. Whether you prefer vaporizer pens , salves , infused edibles , or elixirs , chances are that you have sampled a product that was produced using carbon dioxide CO2 supercritical fluid extraction technology. Although fairly new in cannabis concentrate processing, this technology is anything but new to the botanical extraction industry at large.

However today, the use of CO2 for cannabis extraction is quickly positioning itself to be one of the leading technologies for industrial hash oil production. At the consumer level, retailers more than ever now are labelling their concentrates by extraction method, detailing whether or not solvents were used and to what extent. One popular dichotomy that exists in the cannabis extraction market is between petroleum-based solvents such as butane or propane and more natural solvents such as CO2.

Supercritical fluid extraction SFE is the process of separating components from each other by use of a particular type of solvent. When in this state, supercritical fluids are capable of breaking down structures where they can then be separated, or fractioned. Among the variety of supercritical solvents used for this process, the most common by far is CO2. Supercritical sc-CO2 extraction has been around for decades, appearing first in the s and 90s as a cleaner and more viable alternative to other methods of separation and extraction.

From the decaffeination of coffee and tea to the extraction of essential oils for perfumes, this process has become commonplace in many industries. Carbon dioxide within our natural atmospheric temperature and pressure rests in a gaseous state. CO2 must be frozen and compressed into a liquid and then further until it reaches its supercritical point.

The extraction liquid will strip away the cannabinoids and flavor from the plant material but will probably take some of the green colorings too. Once you believe you have enough cannabinoids in liquid form, heat the liquid to evaporate it down to the CBD base oil.

It is extremely important to understand the various CBD extraction methods as they have a major impact on the quality of the end product; not to mention your health. The cost of CO2 supercritical extraction means it is not possible for Those who create their own CBD oils will tend to use dry ice or olive oil, which provide great purity, yield and are easy to do.

There are also other extraction methods that we have not mentioned in this guide. If you have experience in extracting CBD from the cannabis plant and would like to share your method, feel free to contact us through our Facebook page.

We also sell hemp biomass, clones and seeds. If you want to check us out you can see here. Since chlorophyll is water soluble, and the essence your after, is not. Use hot water to rinse and squeeze the material and repeat. Then the solvent process will yield a higher quality of product. I would think ethyl ether would be even better, however way more volatile of a solvent. In any event, any reaction using ethyl ether should only be carried out by knowledgeable and qualified personnel.

If you thought butane was flammable, step aside cupcake, ether is extremely volatile. Also, keep in mind there is water in acetone too! Water is the most abundant solvent on earth, given time, it will break down anything.

Why are you calling chlorophyll harmful? It actually enhances bioavilability and has other health benefits. Chlorophyll is very easy to remove from any extraction as well.

All you have to do is leave your extraction in the sun for an hour or two and let nature do it. Use fan leafs with lil clippings and used ISO I would do the same process but with high quality buds and high THC content leafs clippings and be a lot more delicate careful not too disturb it too much.

Pls help me understand this process. Cbd comes home with so many benefits. Capable of treating multiple sclerosis, a very bad disease.

How do I achieve this? In the US we need to be under 0. Most companies will use flash chromatography to remove THC from my experience. Cbd is surely a fighter to deal with any kind of sleeping problems.

It is free of side effects that are common in painkillers so I am using it for insomnia regularly. Far better than painkillers! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Your email address will not be published.
