The term random effects in the context of analysis of variance is used to denote factors in an ANOVA design with levels that are not deliberately arranged by the experimenter those factors are called fixed effectsbut that are sampled from a population of possible samples instead. For example, if you are interested in the effect that the quality of different schools has on academic proficiency, you could select a sample of schools to estimate the amount of variance effefts*anova random effects model*proficiency component of variance that is attributable

A simple criterion for deciding whether an effect in an experiment is random or fixed is to determine how you would select or arrange the levels for randomm respective factor in a replication of the study. So far we have been making the implicit assumption that the levels of the treatments were chosen intentionally by the researcher to be of specific interest.

The scope of inference in this situation is limited to the specific levels used in the study. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, treatment levels maybe a random sample of possible levels, and the scope of inference is to a larger population of possible levels. If it is clear that the researcher is interested in comparing specific, chosen levels of a treatment, that treatment is a fixed effect this is what we have covered so far.

On the other hand, if the levels of the treatment are a sample of a larger population of possible levels, then the treatment is a random effect. If we don't care about the actual levels of the treatment, but rather want to understand the variability due to different levels of the treatment, then we could specify the one-way random effects model.

As an example, consider an experiment to determine the relative effect of students and teachers on learning. We randomly pick 5 teachers from all the teachers at an elementary school, and also randomly pick 10students from each of their classrooms. Under the one-way ANOVA model for fixed effects , our goal would be to compare teachers and answer questions like: Is teacher 3 better than teacher 5?

However, we may not be interested in those actual comparisons, but rather be interested in understanding how much variability there is among all the teachers at the school. We can't test everyone, so we randomly select 5 teachers and use those 5 to help us understand the variability between all teachers in a school.

Here are a set of questions you could ask yourself as you try to determine whether the levels of a treatment should be modeled as a fixed or a random effect. Our test statistics for random effects are nearly the same as the test statistics for fixed effects.

The main difference is that some times our denominator cannot be SSE, but needs to be some other sum of squares instead. Looking at the Expected Mean Squares column of the ANOVA table will tell us which term to use as a denominator, and will also be useful later on to help us decide what random effects are most important in the model.

In last week's notes, we considered a national firm that has three training schools in three cities Atlanta, Chicago, and San Francisco. Last week we assumed that each school had only two instructors, but this week let us assume that each school has many teachers. We only have resources to test the learning achieved in 12 classes total, and we want to understand what is more important to learning: So we conduct an experiment as follows:. As this model has both fixed and random effects, itis called a mixed model.

Note that we are using the square-root transformation. The untransformed data did not look normal, while the log-transformed data look very normal, but do not have constant error variance.

You should double-check this in SAS. Recall that if we had wanted to specify Instructor nested within School as a fixed effect, we would have specified the model using the following line. Instead, when we have random effects, the model statement is split up into two lines. If we had more random effects, they would go here after Instructor School. The Instructor School row in the ANOVA table has the test for the effect of instructor within schools, which was a random effect, so the null hypothesis was:.

As this p -value is significant, we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that classes taught by different instructors at the same school have different mean achievement levels.

As the p -value is not significant, we do not reject the null and conclude that different schools do not significantly differ in mean achievement levels. Something surprising has happened! If we treat Instructor as a fixed effect, we find a significant effect of School, but if we treat Instructor as a random effect, we no longer find a significant effect of School! To see what has happened, we need to look closer at the tests. As we described above in this lab, when we have random effects in the model, we need to be careful about the denominator used in the F-test.

We need to find an error term to be the denominator that has Var Residual as its EMS, as this is the only variance term that is not a function of the treatment in question School. The correct denominator here will be the Residual, so the F-test is. So our F-test here will be:. Note that we have fewer denominator degrees of freedom here, which leads to us having less power to reject our null hypothesis. An important point to take away is that hypothesis tests can be greatly different if we have a fixed or a random effect.

That doesn't change how we model. If the treatment should be a random effect, we need to treat it that way. However, we do not test for pairwise differences between the levels of random effects, even when they are significant. Eberly College of Science. The Instructor School row in the ANOVA table has the test for the effect of instructor within schools, which was a random effect, so the null hypothesis was: So our F-test here will be:
